The Silva Method

Welcome to our Silva Method Thought for the Week.

The Art of Meditation

Thank you for being our guest to learn about The Art of Meditation known as Dynamic Meditation, or Self-Mind Control. We will explain what it is, its application in life and of course the benefits from its use.

I am going to cover the most fundamental parts. I was among the few people who had the honor to know Dr. Jose Silva personally, work with him and trained by him. Jose had the kindness and generosity to be a mentor to me as I was going through my formal academic education about this very important "Alpha Level of Mind" that we learn and become able to use when we learn Dr. Silva's method. This level is a very special level of mind. In the Silva Method we call it “The Basic Plane Level.” It is so special that spirituality named this inner level of mind “The Kingdom of Heaven Within.” This kingdom is not a material structure, nor is out there somewhere in another world. Once a person finds this level of mind and learns how to use it, it is not the same person again, nor is taking any serious steps in life without visiting this level first.

Our goal for you today is to learn about life; good, happy life that is worth living and it is free of stress. A life that is full of enthusiasm, creativity and health. A ten-cycles-per-second life, as we call it in Dynamic Meditation. That means a life with peace of mind, success and good health, but most of all, a life that is seen through the power of your attitude and viewpoint within the divine plan. When you control your mind, you use more of it. That is where the power is - using more of your mind. To do that, all you need is a bit of direction.

You might be wondering what is a "ten-cycles-per-second" life and what this “Basic Plane Level? Where is it? How one goes there? And how one is using it?

Well, I am going to give you a step-by-step method to help you understand all about this inner kingdom, this very special level of the mind, and this point of true inner power. If you do not know it, True power is Inner and spiritual in nature.

Your Ten-Cycles-Per-Second Life
In the same manner that your heart beats so many beats per minute, your brain vibrates so many Hertz or cycles per second. These vibrations are called brain wave frequencies, which vary according to our level of consciousness, e.g., sleep or wakefulness, serenity or agitation, concentration or distraction, health or disease. The rhythms of the brain never cease; the brain vibrates even when we are deeply asleep. These rhythms are stimulated by emotions: desire, anxiety, stress, love, hate, anger, fear, calmness; in short, all the various states of the human condition have an effect on the brain’s rhythms depending on the content of your thoughts. Thought is energy; the content of the thought causes a reaction, what we call emotion. The quality of this emotion (positive or negative) causes the feeling we feel. What we feel depends on the content of the substance that was secreted from your endocrine system. Hatred, anxiety, hostility, agitation, tension, all negative emotionality activates the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal gland Axis (HPA Axis) orchestrated by the Pituitary gland and a symphony of physical-bodily responses can be measured. Love, gratitude, optimism, enthusiasm calmness, peace within and all positive emotionality activates the Pineal gland which instead of sending the stress hormones to flat your body, it activates the healing wisdom of the body and the endocrine system secretes endorphins with their analgesic effects and healing properties.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if these rhythms could be controlled? By controlling the brain waves, you would have control over your life. Don't we all want that?

The good news is that you can control your brain waves.

Scientists have identified four basic types of brain waves - corresponding to four levels of brain activity.

. Beta

. Alpha

. Theta

. Delta

The frequency of each kind of brain wave, is visible in graphs generated by an electroencephalogram (EEG) hooked up to a person's skull.

At the lowest end of the scale of possible brain-wave activity is the production of one-half cycle per second; at the highest, eighty-five cycles per second.

These figures are extremes referring to the deepest kind of sleep at the low point and an epileptic seizure when the brain is at its most excited state at the high point. More common is four to forty cycles per second, representing deep sleep through intense excitement.

Brain Frequencies
When you are in Delta, you produce brain waves vibrating from one-half to four cycles per second (CPS or Hz). Delta is associated with deep sleep and is least researched in the science of consciousness.

When you are in Theta, your brain vibrates from four to seven CPS and it is when you are also asleep. Theta is also the level where biological intelligence resides; it is where your bodily systems function. It is that part of you that receives information from your five senses and the outer environment. It is the area of your emotions and bodily functions. It is where your instincts reside, or what we call Biological Intelligence, or Animal Intelligence.

When in Alpha, you produce seven to fourteen CPS. Alpha is the area of deep relaxation, light sleep and dreaming, sometimes also called REM (for rapid eye movement) because eyes flicker rapidly when you are dreaming. It is the area where Human Intelligence resides, or your soul. It is the level of thought, the level of the mind that knows no separation, where the ego dissolves, the Inner Conscious level, where your mental faculties are active and your mind more alert and creative. It the Kingdom of Heaven within, where all the cosmos unfolds in front of you and you realize that you are part of this cosmic harmonic dance. It is the level that the small "i am" understands it's greatness and its real place within the big "I AM" or "BEING."

When the brain vibrates in Beta, it is called the outer conscious state of awareness. Your brain produces waves from fourteen to forty CPS and higher under special emotional circumstances. It is the dimension of action and physical movement. It is the level you are now as you hear me. It is the level of the mind that sees separation, categorization and division. It is the level of thinking limitation and thought being imprisoned in form. The level of suffering, the level of the thriving ego. The level of the small " i am."

When excited by negative emotions such as anger, resentment, jealousy, fear, nervousness apprehension, or any stirring emotion, that rhythm increases and the brain's activity rises above twenty-one CPS to twenty-two, twenty-five, or more CPS, where disharmony kicks in.

Poor health, excitability, poor learning ability and weak concentration are due in part to an excessive degree of brain-wave activity.

The rhythm of good health, the rhythm of intelligence, the rhythm of concentration, the rhythm of ease - indeed, the rhythm of pure genius - lies in the area of brain-wave production that falls below fourteen cycles per second.

Let's look at the consequences of high brain-wave activity and contrast that with the benefits of lower rates.

Stress and Anxiety
Stress and anxiety are associated with a brain-wave production above twenty-one cycles per second. Almost everyone in the scientific and medical community agrees that stress is the underlying cause of many health problems.

When the brain activity is above twenty-one CPS (the area of normal conscious motor activity), the mechanism that controls immunity is depleted and the community of pathogens, germs and viruses that , by the way is ever present, is in some manner invited in.

When these organisms that are so minute and airborne enter the body, the immune system, which we can call "Homeland Security", instead of functioning normally and destroying the invading forces of germ/virus allowing the individual to remain healthy, becomes disregulated, depressed, weak, and the pathogens multiply and overwhelm immune system's cells ability to destroy them causing illness and disease.

Excessive brain wave activity causes other problems besides ill health. When brain activity is above twenty-one cycles per second, concentration is ruined. The thoughts of the individual go through an upheaval and are barraged by a series of inconsequential matters. Concentration and clear thought is clouded. Thousands of constantly changing thoughts, seemingly out of control, keep the mind from concentrating on what is important. In the high Beta area - forty cycles per second, it becomes increasingly difficult to concentrate on any one subject for long.

You find yourself uneasy and cannot sit still. The mind flits from thought to thought like a bee buzzing from flower to flower; before the complete formations of one thought you're on to still another. It's difficult to remember things, and even your last thought vanishes like a dream that fades when you come to full wakefulness.

When excitement creates a high rate of brain wave activity and increased brain energy, it builds forces that must be released. Emotions. The mind dissipates this force through physical actions, and so the body is harassed and becomes a battle field between the two armies of though and emotions, and you often find yourself doing things you later regret.

The body, unable to utilize its natural consciousness and blocked by the demands of the psyche, grows weaker and less effective in fighting off the many problems presented to it.

If an excessive degree of brain-wave activity were at the root of so many problems, it would follow that the ability to control brain waves could help us to solve many of our problems.

Indeed, keeping brain-wave activity to a lower rate has innumerable benefits. For one thing, it fosters the opposite of disease, or dis-ease.

When you are at ease...

You are comfortable and relaxed.

Your brain waves show a slower rate of vibration
Your defense mechanism via the immune system is strong and you are usually ready to fight off the hoards of pathogens, germs and viruses.
A normal, healthy person producing less than twenty cycles per second of brain activity cannot be in a state of disease; on the contrary, the person is at ease. The mid-range Alpha state - around ten cycles per second of brain wave activity - is a restful, relaxed and creative state. A state from which you have access to both worlds, the physical and the spiritual.

By consciously lowering your brain waves (without falling asleep), you become focused and better able to concentrate.

Achieving brain activity in the midrange Alpha area is useful for any activity requiring thought. Thoughts are clear; you are better able to examine them and to become aware of all their dimensions. This is the state of "being" in which the mind tends to separate from the body and the bodily intelligence, with no interference from the mind; the clear mind, the constructive thoughts now guide "Biological Intelligence" to re-align itself with harmony and balance and to heal itself.

And therein lies your Alpha mind...at ten-cycles-per-second.

Reaching Alpha...a meditative process

An easy way to achieve the Alpha state of ten cycles per second is through the meditative process as taught in the Silva Method Original Dynamic Meditation or BLS-4.

What meditation does is to slow down the brain waves and separate the mind from the body.

This enables the mind to concentrate better since it does not have to deal with the body's nervous or emotional manifestations, or its reactions to outer or inner stimuli.

As far as the physical body is concerned, without the mind to harass it, the bodily intelligence can do its work wisely.

Its main job is to keep the cells in an energized balance so that it can be stabilized in a healthy condition.

The major health benefit of meditation is keeping the mind from interfering with the body so both may do their respective jobs - the body healing itself when ill, and maintaining health when well. The mind finding its Source and becoming one with it.

The meditative technique that we teach, we call it "centering." And it is dynamic because once you connect your mind with the ONE mind a transformation takes place and you enter the "Cosmic Dance of Consciousness" which guides you in every step and offers guidance to help you solve problems, create, attract people, things and the circumstances in your life that you want. This transformation from the little "i am" to the big "I AM" is a point of no return. You are able now to use "Consciousness" in a Dynamic Way, as you now KNOW that you are part of it, one with it.

By center, we mean the ten-cycle-per-second, or alpha dimension of brain-wave activity. When you are centered, your cells recharge and regenerate, so to speak.

Through 25 years of research and 60 years of feedback from our graduates, we have determined that virtually everyone can achieve the center level of ten cycles per second while maintaining awareness with our training.

By so doing, practitioners find themselves restored mentally and physically and well rested for the daily routine of living in the Presence.

The experience is both rewarding in itself as well as essential for other problem solving techniques. Centering is the first stage of meditation, the initial step in consciously relaxing to the 10 cycle alpha area of mind and a slower brain wave frequency. Then from this center or the Kingdom of Heaven Within, you can access all other levels of consciousness for further spiritual development, if you so desire. The Gate is now open.
